History & Efficacy
The History of Our Waters
The Origin of “Hirayama”
According to ancient legends, the history of Hirayama Onsen began approximately 1,200 years ago when it seems that a vicious skin disease spread wildly in the area, causing great suffering among the local villagers. And so, the villagers traveled far and long to offer their prayers to the deity known as Aso Daimyojin. It is said that once they offered their prayers, in the matter of a single evening, the deity opened a tall mountain and filled its deep valleys to create flat land.
That land then came to be known as “Hirayama” (Flat Mountain). From this land, rich hot springs gushed forth, and after bathing in these waters, the villagers were instantly cured of the vicious skin disease.
